Australian Parrots

australia background

Although the Americas have a greater number of parrot species, Australia has the most diverse selection of parrots and cockatoos. There are 56 species native to Australia and over 40 of those are only found in Australia. Early colonists often referred to Australia as "Parrot Land".

Parrots inhabit many different ecological niches in Australia ranging from the tropical rainforests of northern Australia to the vast grasslands of the Outback and the many coastal regions. Some Australian species even thrive in urban environments!

For a great overview of the parrots found in Australia check out this video clip from a PBS Special, Parrots in the Land of Oz
